Dental equilibration as a preventative medicine

The importance of dentistry is becoming more and more recognized as owners realize the benefits of annual care of their horse's teeth.  Think of it this way:  Horses' teeth are as important as their feet.  A good horse owner would not leave their horse's feet untrimmed or without shoes for years. Without well taken care of hooves a horse cannot travel soundly.  Dental care for your horse, along with adequate feed, water, exercise, as well as regular veterinary and farrier care, is an investment and can add many more years to your horse's life .

Without proper dental care, a horse may...

* resist the bit, causing problems during riding

* be unbalanced, making the horse only want to pick up one lead or lean to one direction

* refuse to collect, and being unable to correctly perform maneuvers

* not be able to digest food efficiently, increasing the risk for colic and choke

* have unnecessary pain that can lead to behavioral problems

* drop feed, which can greatly increase your feed bill

* lose weight, leading to buying more expensive feed to maintain body weight

Dentistry can help correct these problems but preventing them through annual care is highly reccommended.
